I'm Gonna Be Famous!

2003-03-14 12:31 a.m.
Coming to Chicago was crazy enough. I up and moved to a strange city with no friends, no job, and no real plan. I get here and decide since Im doing something completely out of the ordinary, I should go full-fledged with this run and find some things to impress my friends along the way.

So I do Coyote Ugly auditions. And that was fun. I met a new friend that way, and I had a heck of a story from it.

And now the bug had bitten. What other adventures can I get into?

I *will* go skydiving when Amber and Nicolle come for a visit. Herbie has talked me into doing a Polar Bear club swim the next time that goes down. Ive got small-scale stuff going on, and Im looking for more.

So what I thought was my next adventure landed in my lap: being in a rock video for Billy Corigans new group. The video is being filmed here in Chicago, and I scored tickets as a crowd member. If nothing else, its like a free concert.

Only theyre playing the same song over and over again.

But its a free concert, right? And who knows -- I may pull a Courtney Cox and become wildly famous off of this deal, making $1m per episode on my NBC sitcom with five other really attractive people.

So this is still on. This is the plan for Saturday.

You ask what my plans are for tomorrow?

How about being in a movie? And not one of those student or artsy independent films where the director announces that its time for everyone to get naked and before you know it, you realize youve been duped into playing an extra in a porno.

Look Maa, Im Voyeur #4!

Lets add that to the resume, okay?

So today Im walking along North and Milwaukee when I see a bunch of film stuff taking up the sidewalk. I walk to the other side, and theres this honest-to-god real actor there. Hes mighty handsome, and the girls across the street are swooning. I figure [shrug] I should be in this movie, and I go to see what I can do about it.

I start talking to the right people around the set, and before ya know it, Im snapping a headshot of myself, printing it at Walgreens, and then making a couple copies at Kinkos.

I got it in the right hands, mentioned my previous work in Austin (I did an ad for my group at IBM and also did a voiceover for one of their classes, so it counts as talent work!!!), and how I was new to the area and agent shopping. The extras coordinator and I hit it off, she took my picture, and we talked about the Chicago market (mostly ads, which is good since Im so small...), and she said that Ill most likely hear back tomorrow to show up then.

Woo-hoo! I ROCK!

And if nothing else, I can always con my way onto the stage on Saturday and do that funny dance that Ms. Cox did.

Before ya know it, youll hear me on the Simpons: All I have in my youth, legions of fans, and millions of dollars. Hey -- I want a walk-in humidor!
